We’re a little over two weeks away from the NHL season, and no matter how many times they break local hearts in the playoffs, the Capitals remain one of our area’s best loved teams.

Most of the team’s core players are coming off of recent World Cup of Hockey appearances primed for regular season action, including Russians Alex Ovechkin, Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetzov, Swede Nicklas Backstrom and Americans John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and T.J. Oshie.

2015-16 might have ended in a heartbreakingly close overtime loss amidst a comeback effort in Game 6 against Pittsburgh, but the team still returns a talented lineup with one of the league’s best young goaltenders for this year’s campaign. Here’s to optimism.
